A little imagination goes a long way

September 4, 2009

Many graduates are facing the inevitable struggle of finding a job in today’s economy. When the defeating realization sets in that, even armed with a college education, no companies are knocking at your door, some graduates go to great lengths.

Alex Kearns, a 23-year-old Swansea University grad, found a great way to get his resume seen. Kearns hung a 10-foot resume from a building in London’s Trafalgar Square and walked around holding up a sign that read “Give Me A Job!”.

Kearns’ plan worked, and he was contacted for an interview with the International Business Development Group. He is now a sales executive for the company, and has gotten offers for interviews with other companies.

“I saw it as a golden opportunity to sell myself,” Kearns said. “I had applied for hundreds of jobs but nobody was giving me a chance. And it worked, my new boss said he was impressed that I had some get-up-and-go.”

Never underestimate the power of “in-your-face” media.
