Happy Birthday Twitter and the growth of social networking

To celebrate Twitter’s 4th birthday, we thought we’d discuss the growth of social networking usage around the world. According to the Nielson Company, global web users spend an average of almost 5 and a half hours on social networking sites per month. This average comes in 2 hours more than the average last February, and the active unique audience to social networks grew nearly 30%, from 244.2M to 314.5M in the last year. 

Although the U.S. has the largest unique social networking audience, it’s per person average comes in third behind Italy and Australia.

If you’re wondering where network users are spending their time, your answer lies in Facebook, which has the largest active unique audience globally. Its users also spent more time per session, logging nearly six hours per user across the globe, which far exceeds that of other networks.

Do these numbers surprise you at all? Were you expecting them to be higher or lower? 

Seeing the numbers in this way will allow us to realize how much time we are each spending participating in social networks. Even the casual Facebook user is likely spending a more considerable amount of time on the site than he or she realizes. 

With the prevalence of social networking in our society today, it is always interesting to see its growth and reflect on its place in our own lives.
